     Bed linen is one of the most important attributes of providing comfortable and safe conditions for sleep and rest. Since a person spends more than a third of his life sleeping and bed linen has a long contact with the skin, it is necessary that it be of high quality and suitable for the type of skin. In this article, we will analyze in detail the two most popular fabrics for bed linen, coarse calico and satin. There are two groups of people who have decided on their preferences and have been buying bedding sets from either coarse calico or satin all their lives.

Coarse calico

General characteristics for coarse calico and satin

Coarse calico and satin are made mainly from natural cotton fiber. Cotton grows in a warm climate and has a fluffy structure, the well-known cotton wool was previously made from refined cotton fiber. Cotton has a number of characteristic features:

  • hygroscopicity, good property for bed linen, in summer your body will not be wet;
  • good breathability, which means that your body will be saturated with oxygen at night;
  • environmental friendliness and friendliness to nature, after use, cotton completely decomposes;

satin

Satin or calico what are the differences?

Satin differs from calico by the method of weaving threads, as well as the type of threads used. Satin weave is when there is one warp thread for five facial threads. This method, invented and first applied in China, allows you to get a smooth, durable and beautiful fabric. This is also facilitated by the use of highly twisted, thin threads, thinner than calico by 2-3 times. Satin has a reverse rough side. Mako satin is an elite expensive type of satin made from long-staple Egyptian cotton, characterized by amazing softness and silkiness. Microsatin, as well as novosatin, are woven using the satin method, but with the addition of synthetic components that reduce the cost of the fabric and make it even stronger and less prone to wrinkling. Stripe satin and jacquard are especially beautiful materials, dense and durable.

Coarse calico is woven using the linen method, when the threads are intertwined crosswise, while not twisted threads of the same thickness are used. Coarse calico gold has the same weave as that of ordinary calico, the difference is the composition of the matter. In gold calico, the ratio of cotton to synthetic fibers may vary depending on the manufacturer from 80% cotton and 20% polyester to 50% cotton, 50% polyester.

What is more beautiful calico or satin bedding?

let's start with the calico:

  • it has a matte surface with dense and rather thick threads visible to the naked eye;
  • calico bed linen can have a wide variety of patterns, both bright and in pastel colors;
  • high-quality calico will not be very enlightened, giving out drawings on covers of blankets and pillows, as well as a mattress;
  • keeps its shape well, the first few uses look like starched;

satin:

  • it has a pronounced brilliance that remains noticeable for a long time;
  • drapes beautifully, has a dense, smooth fabric structure that is not translucent;
  • stripe satin shimmers in the light with alternating matte and shiny stripes, and jacquard impresses with the beauty of its woven patterns;

Which material is stronger and denser than satin or coarse calico?

With the same density of 110-140g / m2, satin will be denser and stronger than calico, due to the special weaving of threads. And also due to the use of higher quality raw materials, which have a longer structure of cotton fibers. Calico threads are thicker and when washed, they are more susceptible to abrasion, while satin threads are thin, so there is less friction, and therefore wear.

Coarse calico luxury and premium are made from high quality and more expensive cotton, therefore they have a denser and more beautiful structure, as well as stronger than ordinary calico.

What fabric for bed linen is softer and thinner calico or satin?

Satin is definitely softer and thinner than coarse calico, this applies to all types. With seemingly the same density of 130g / m2, the calico will be hard to the touch and rough, only after several washes this feature will decrease slightly. Satin, stripe satin and jacquard will be soft from the start, these fabrics are suitable for the most delicate skin and never irritate.

Which bed is better in quality coarse calico or satin?

The main quality criteria for KPB: softness, hygroscopicity, air permeability, long service life, good appearance. According to these parameters, satin has no equal. It looks great, the service life is 1.5-2 times higher than that of coarse calico. Coarse calico gold has a longer period of operation than the usual type, since it contains polyester fibers that do not wear out, although such linen will invariably appear pellets.

What is more expensive coarse calico or satin bed linen?

High-quality satin definitely exceeds the price of ordinary calico made of 100% cotton, but not by much on average by 30-40%. If we take the service life of satin, then the cost is quite justified, even despite the consumer qualities of satin sets. Coarse calico luxury and premium are almost identical in cost to satin sets. The most expensive are sets of stripe satin and jacquard. But here, too, the benefits are not so clear-cut, as the double-sided jacquard weave increases the service life to an incredible 400-500 wash cycles.

Satin bedding

Coarse calico or satin which is better for a child?

For a newborn, the tenderness and softness of the fabric with which his body comes into contact is important, so the choice is obvious - this is satin. It will not cause skin irritation, allergies and other negative consequences from interaction with a fairly hard coarse calico. The only downside is the cost. Therefore, many parents choose sets of coarse calico, it is less demanding for care and withstands washing tests, because the life of children's bed linen is not so long.

How to care for CPB from coarse calico and satin?

Let's take a look at natural and blended fabrics with the addition of synthetics in order.

From 100% cotton, coarse calico and satin are washed under similar conditions:

  1. you will need to separate colored from plain products;
  2. the water temperature is not higher than 40 degrees, with it, the cotton fibers do not swell much, respectively, and deteriorate less;
  3. wash and dry at low speed no more than 400-500 per minute;
  4. fill the drum of the machine no more than half;
  5. it is better to wash natural bed sets with detergents that do not contain phosphates and other harmful substances in order to preserve their useful natural qualities;

Blended fabrics are washed separately from natural fabrics, as polyester clings to cotton fibers and damages them, reducing their lifespan.

Materials containing polyester:

  1. water temperature should not exceed 30-35 degrees, since polyester is subject to deformation at elevated temperatures, without returning to its original values;
  2. if the temperature regime is not observed, in fabrics with synthetics in the composition, pellets will form;
  3. dry away from open sources of heat and sunlight.
