The density of the fabric is one of the most important quality indicators. It determines how long the kit will last, as well as how it will look after several washes.
What is satin density?
In the physical sense, density denotes how much material is per unit surface and it is measured in cubes, but since the thickness of matter is negligible and can be neglected for calculations, in the textile industry it is measured either in threads or in grams per unit area. There are two types of measurement of this characteristic: linear and surface. Let's take a closer look at what these two concepts mean:
the linear density of satin is the number of threads per square centimeter, that is, the denser the material, the more threads fit in a centimeter;
the surface density of satin fabric is measured in grams per m2, that is, how many grams one square meter of matter weighs;
Linear density characteristics are mainly used by European manufacturers of bed linen, while Ukrainian factories indicate surface density data. The surface density is easy enough to check, for this it is necessary to weigh the set, and then multiply by the indicated density value. And knowing the overall dimensions of the sleeping set, it is easy to calculate the total area and compare the two indicators obtained.
Density of satin luxury
It is usually measured in yarns per unit area to show how much fine and quality yarns are used in production. One of the premium types of satin, which is one and a half to two times thicker than ordinary satin. This fabric shimmers in the light, does not wrinkle and looks like new even after numerous washes. A distinctive feature is the softness comparable to silk.
Density of satin stripe
Satin stripe is a high-density material due to the peculiarity of double jacquard weaving, a variety of which is stripe. Luxurious views are treated with mercerization, which improves not only the appearance, but also the quality characteristics. Satin stripe with a density below 130g / m2 is not of high quality, it will wrinkle a lot. The optimal indicator is 135-160.
High density satin
This type includes ordinary satin with a density over 140gr / m2, luxury satin, as well as jacquard, this also includes mako satin and stripe. You need to understand that a fabric with 120 threads per cm2 is more expensive in production than a high density of 140 grams per m2. Since it is made from the finest threads, which can be woven exclusively from long-staple cotton, and it is valued on a par with silk. Kits with a density of 100-120 nits / cm2 are less susceptible to shrinkage, perfectly retain their appearance, and are practically not subject to crushing and surface deformation.
What is the best satin density for bedding?
Indicators are given in grams per square meter, in online stores you can often find the abbreviation g / m2.
- 90-100 indicator is below average, used for sewing low-quality products;
- 100-125 this density for ordinary satin, is used in most bedding sets, which are sewn by Ukrainian, as well as Chinese and Pakistani sewing factories;
- 125-135 is the standard of surface density for high-quality sateen from which bed linen is sewn;
- 135-150 this indicator for high density satin, which include jacquard, stripe, mako and De Lux satin;
What density of satin to choose?
It would seem that the higher the better, but not everything is so simple. Oddly enough, with an increase in the surface density, the hygienic properties of satin deteriorate. It is less permeable to air, and a decrease in moisture-absorbing properties is also observed. Therefore, some people prefer percale or ranfors bedding for the summer period, which is quite justified. But there is a way out for satin bedding, you need to choose a density not higher than 135g / m2, then you can comfortably use the kit all year round. Such products will have a good balance in terms of service life as well as comfort.
If we are talking about high-quality expensive products made of high-density satin, surface density, then the situation is different here. The fabric turns out to be dense, but airy, and vice versa, it absorbs moisture better, and also removes it from the surface, thin threads do not have time to soak in it. Therefore, high-quality high-density satin with the number of threads 120-180cm2 is ideal for sewing luxury bedding sets with increased comfort.
